1. If you could share one book for wedding photographers to read, what would it be?
Only one book? If I can only share one book for wedding photographers to read, it would be Donald Miller’s Building a Story Brand Because that book will transform the way you communicate through your business. You’ll love his words so much you’ll begin listening to his podcast, and through his podcast you’ll learn of other books.
2. What is your favorite part about the experience that you give your couples?
I love my order sessions with my couples. I love bringing them back into my home as we view their photos for the very first time. Then I have the opportunity to guide them in choosing which photos they want to bring to life. I can’t think of a better way to serve my clients than through this process.
3. What is one of your biggest tips for time management?
Great time management starts with a plan. Plans start with business plans, yearly, quarterly, and monthly marketing plans, and workflows. When you don’t structure your time and give it tasks, you’re left completing meaningless tasks and going around in circles.
4. How did you get started in your business?
100% on accident. I purchased a used crop sensor on eBay back in 2010. I offered to photograph five sessions for free at the end of October. That winter, a friend asked me to photograph their last minute wedding. I researched everything I could find from the public library, edited the wedding one photo at a time with picnik and turned the wedding around in 24 hours. By the grace of God, I didn’t screw up that wedding. And with some luck, I booked two more weddings that year. The rest is history!
5.. Can you tell us a little bit about your education as a wedding photographer?
As a former high school teacher, I take great pride in continuing my education. There’s always room for more growth and to expand your knowledge. Every year when I do my yearly budget, I set aside 3-5k for my education. Whether it’s attending United in Arizona, hiring a business coach, or purchasing online courses, I always leave room to continue learning.
6. What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Family is very important to me. I have more “free time” than I do business/work time on purpose. In the evenings you’ll find my little family and I spending quality time together. Once a week we try to plan some kind of family outing – whether it’s to the Massillon Rec. to swim, or SkyMax to jump. Josh and I are excited for another summer where Charlotte is even more active than the year before!
